🤿 Tips for spotting creatures at Cocos

  • Look into the blue, not at the rockat Cocos the show is pelagic. Hammerheads, Galápagos sharks, tuna and mantas pass through the water column. If you only look at the bottom you miss half the list.
  • Hovering barberfish are a signthe yellow fish with the black mask is the hammerhead cleaner. When they gather on top of the pinnacle, the station is open. Hook in, wait, breathe slowly.
  • The thermocline is where they arebelow 25 m the water suddenly gets cold and that is where the hammerheads come in. A 5 mm suit with a hood makes the wait bearable.
  • Hook on the rock and hands stillhooked in, you become part of the scenery and the animals come. Too many bubbles and waving arms keep the hammerheads away.
  • On the night dive, torch lowat Manuelita the whitetips hunt in your beam. Light the bottom, not the animal's eye, and do not chase: they come on their own.
  • The safety stop countssilky sharks, marlin, dolphins and whale sharks show up at 5 m. Keep watching the blue until the last minute.
  • Do not touch, chase or blocknational park, real enforcement. Tiger sharks and mantas you watch from a distance and without turning your back.
