A week in the
southern atolls

The South Route is the other side of the Maldives. Far from the central atoll circuit, the southern atolls concentrate channels exposed to the open ocean, strong currents and encounters with pelagics. It is a route for the well travelled diver, and that is why it comes with strict prerequisites.

The Maldives South Route is a current route. The requirements below are not a recommendation, they are a condition for boarding: without them you cannot join. If you do not meet one of them yet, talk to us, there is still time to sort it out before February 2028.

Day by day

The South Route itinerary

This is the sample itinerary for the route. The number of dives, the dive sites and the activities can change with weather conditions or other unforeseen factors: the daily program is decided by the crew, on board, according to sea and current.

Day 1 · Boarding

Briefing, cabins and check dive

Before leaving port there is the safety meeting, the crew introduction, the dive paperwork, the cabin assignments and the general orientation about the vessel. Then we sail to the first dive site for the check dive. This is the moment to get familiar with the boat and settle in.

Days 2 to 6 · The wild south

Gaaf Alifu, Fuvahmulah and Addu

The cruise runs through the Gaaf Alifu, Fuvahmulah and Addu atolls, where the big pelagics are. Most of the dives are drift dives, and that is why the route requires previous experience with this kind of diving. Very few operators visit this area, and that is what keeps it a well kept secret among divers who know the best liveaboard destinations.

Fuvahmulah · Gnaviyani Atoll

The great highlight of the route

Thresher sharks, oceanic whitetips and tiger sharks are commonly found here. If weather conditions allow, the island will be visited. On special occasions you can watch groups of up to 50 pygmy killer whales around the vessel.

After the first dive, the boat may pull into the harbor for a tour of the island, with its freshwater lakes, farmland and beaches. After a snack comes the second dive of the day.

Addu · Seenu Atoll

Mantas, walls and a 1944 wreck

Turquoise blue lagoons, coral reefs, abundant marine life and beaches lined with coconut palms.

✦Demon Point. For the experienced diver who wants a dive in current. Large gatherings of manta rays are common here.

✦Makunda and Muduka. On the drift dives, Napoleon wrasse, grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks.

✦British Loyalty. A 140 meter wreck that sank in 1944 and rests at around 34 meters, today home to a lot of colorful life.

✦Gulda Lamago. Walls, overhangs and caves with green turtles, lobsters, eagle rays, manta rays and several shark species.

Huvadhoo · Gaafu Alif and Gaafu Dhaalu

The second largest atoll in the world

A big concentration of sharks, grey reef sharks above all, with a chance of great hammerhead, silvertip and tiger. When there is plenty of plankton, even whale shark. The almost untouched coral areas are one of the highlights of the region.

On the night dives you can see green turtles, rays and the lemon coralfish, a clownfish species endemic to the southern Maldives.

Out of the water

In the afternoon, when no night dive is scheduled, there can be visits ashore. After dinner, on board there are games, movies, karaoke, the jacuzzi, or simply the boat and the sea.

Day 7 · Last dives

Up to two dives in the morning

How many depends on each guest’s flight time, and it respects the mandatory minimum interval of 24 hours without diving before flying.

Day 8 · Return

Huvadhoo to Male

Disembark at Huvadhoo Atoll and board the domestic flight to Male, arriving at the airport for the international connection home.
